Targeted Therapies

Drug treatments aimed at a specific receptor or mutation.

Targeted therapies are drugs that have been specifically developed to attack a particular feature or pathway in the cancer cell’s metabolism.  There are many new targeted therapies being developed.  The first and most commonly recognised example of this treatment is Herceptin which specifically targets the HER2 receptor which is present in an overactive way in some types of cancer.  Again, your Medical Oncologist will be the person who can give you the most up to date advice as to whether there are targeted therapies suitable for your cancer treatment.
