Oncoplastic surgery refers to the use of some plastic surgical techniques to reshape the breast and improve the appearance of the breast after breast conserving surgery.
It is an area of breast surgery that has evolved over the last 25-30 years and is specifically aimed at allowing larger tumours to be removed from the breast without the need for mastectomy but still providing an appropriate cosmetic result.
It is often not necessary in the management of many small early breast cancers. Your breast surgeon will advise you on the appropriate surgery needed to remove your breast cancer.
Please note that oncoplastic surgery is performed by breast surgeons and not by specialist plastic and reconstructive surgeons. If you are concerned about the potential cosmetic outcome of your surgery then a specialist plastic and reconstructive surgeon is the person who can give you the most comprehensive advice.
