Chemotherapy

These drugs kill cancer cells and are another way of improving your long term survival.

Chemotherapy involves giving drugs, usually through a vein into the bloodstream, that will interfere with the cancer cells growing and multiplying, causing them to die.  The exact type of drug treatment will be advised by your Medical Oncologist and is tailored to the features of your individual cancer.  Chemotherapy drugs are often given as a combination of two or more drugs to improve their effectiveness.  Because they can potentially affect all cells in your body that are growing and multiplying, they can cause some normal cells to die and this is what can cause some of the commoner side effects such as hair loss, disturbances of the gut and low blood counts.
